ULFA kills 28 more, red alert in Assam

Assam has been put on red alert as gun-toting United Liberation Front of Asom militants were on a rampage in three Upper Assam districts where they have mowed down 48 people since Friday, including 28 on Saturday.

ULFA extremists shot dead 28 more innocent persons, mostly Hindi-speaking milkmen in separate incidents in Tinsukia and Dhemaji districts of the state in the early hours of Saturday.

With this, the death toll in the latest ULFA fury rose to 48, including the 20 persons who were shot dead in separate incidents in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts on Friday.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday informed that red alert was sounded in the state and additional companies of paramilitary forces were being deployed in the worst-affected Tinsukia district.

Gogoi informed that 48 persons were shot dead by ULFA militants in separate attacks. Earlier, the state government asked for 78 additional companies of paramilitary forces to be deployed in violence-affected areas.

Tinsukia district administration clamped night curfew in the entire district since 5 pm on Saturday evening. A total of 32 persons have been shot dead by ultras in the district since Friday night.

The state government announced Rs 3 lakh as compensation for every death, while Rs 50,000 each would be given to those seriously injured in the latest series of attacks by ULFA. Those escaped with minor injury would be given Rs 10,000 each.

Three ministers of Bihar government, accompanied by senior officials, will arrive in the state on Sunday to take stock of the situation in view of attacks on Bihari people earning their livelihood as milkmen and brick kiln workers in Upper Assam areas.

According to police, heavily armed ULFA ultras shot dead 13 milkmen at Ghoramara village under Sadiya police station, while four others were killed at Philobari under Doom Dooma police station of Tinsukia district in the wee hours on Saturday. Marauding ULFA ultras shot dead three other persons at Pengeri in the district.

A group of ULFA ultras opened random fire at around 1 am on Saturday killing 8 milkmen at Pukhuri Chapori under Jonai police station of Dhemaji district.
