By the time Strel reached Belem he was severely debilitated by diarrhoea, cramps, sunstroke, nausea, high blood pressure and dizziness from nearly 1,590 hours on the Amazon.
When he reached 'point zero' he was lifted out of the river and rushed to a hospital for emergency care.
While the last few kilometres were the toughest as he battled Atlantic Ocean waves and endless rain, it was Strel's belief that by the end of of his sojourn on the Amazon, the animals had accepted him as part of their river and that was how he succeeded in reaching the finishing line safely.
