When Strel reached Prainha on March 23 he was greeted by a crowd of enthusiastic locals (seen in this photograph).
Incidentally Prainha and nearby environs is a highly piranha infested belt of the Amazon. To distract the piranhas team-members threw in pieces of meat and blood for this highly carnivorous species of fish.
Piranhas apparently stick more to the shoreline and Strel was advised to always stay in the middle of the river. He also applied petroleum to his wet suit to camouflage the smell of his body from the fish.
