India has raised the issue of security for its nationals in Russia in the wake of the suspected racial killing of an Indian medical student in St Petersburg four days back.
The Indian consulate in St Petersburg is in close touch with the family of the deceased Nitish Kumar Singh and is assisting them, Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Navtej Sarna said on Wednesday.
Two senior consuls were sent to the hostel and are in close touch with the Russian authorities and the students' body there, Sarna said.
The 27-year-old final year medical student, was stabbed to death at St Petersburg in a suspected case of racial attack.
Singh a student of Mechnikov Medical Academy, was attacked near his hostel.
The police, who have lodged a criminal case, do not rule out racial hatred behind the killing of the student.
The killing has triggered protests by Indian students in St Petersburg.
In April, another Indian medical student was attacked on the same spot.
However, he was saved. St Petersburg has a large foreign student population and is known for attacks on foreigners and extreme nationalism.
