'93 Blasts Verdict Continues

October 21, 2006
The TADA court on Monday held four accused guilty for helping prime accused Tiger Memon in smuggling arms and RDX that were used in the 1993 serial bomb blasts, but acquitted another accused for want of evidence.

Muzamil Umar Kadri, Khalil Ahmed Sayyed Nazir and Gulam Hafeez Shaikh were convicted for taking part in RDX landing operations at Shekhadi coast in February 1993, for transporting weapons and also for possessing arms.

The court also found Tulsiram Dhondu Surve, watchman of high-security Wangani microwave tower in Raigad district, guilty of allowing use of government property by Tiger for assembling arms and reloading them in jeeps and tempos for distribution.

Surve was also found guilty of concealing 59 bags of RDX in his farm in Raigad district.

Judge P D Kode, however, acquitted Anant Bhoir of Thane district, who had allowed his dumper to be used for dumping 59 RDX bags in Nagla Bunder creek.

The court said he was being acquitted as he had no knowledge that the goods were RDX.

The TADA court on Tuesday held three accused in the 1993 serial blasts case guilty on various counts, including helping prime conspirators Tiger Memon, Mohammad Dossa and Ijaz Pathan in perpetrating the crime.

However, the court acquitted two others for want of evidence.

Those held guilty on Tuesday were Sayyed Abdul Rehman Shaikh, a close lieutenant of Tiger, Manoj Bhanavarilal Gupta, main associate of Ijaz Pathan and Mohammed Kasam Lajpuria alias Mechanic Chacha, a right-hand man of Dossa.

Judge P D Kode acquitted Shakeel Shahabuddin Shaikh and Devdas Keshav Ghule as their involvement in the crime could not be established.

The TADA court on Wednesday held three accused, among them a father-son duo, guilty of helping prime conspirator Tiger Memon in carrying out the serial bomb blasts in Mumbai in 1993.

Issaq Hajwani, his son Sikander and Shahnawaz were held guilty under various provisions of TADA.

Soon after the verdict, they were taken into custody and their bail bonds cancelled.

The court on Wednesday also exempted actor Sanjay Dutt and 25 other accused from personal appearance until further orders in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case.

All those accused appeared before designated Judge P D Kode in accordance with summons issued to them.

Throughout the proceedings, Dutt, dressed in blue jeans and sky blue shirt, was sitting on a bench with the other accused.

He was allowed to leave at about 2.30 pm.

Several fans had gathered outside the court and ran after Dutt as he emerged.

However, Dutt managed to get into his car with the help of the policemen on duty.

Outside the court, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told reporters that the verdict on Dutt is expected after Diwali holidays.

Dutt is charged with possessing and destroying an AK-56 rifle.

The TADA court on Thursday held two close associates of prime conspirator Mohammed Dossa guilty of helping in the smuggling of arms and RDX used in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts.

Uttam Potdar and Salim Mira Shaikh were held guilty of facilitating landing of arms and RDX at Dighi coast in Raigad in February 1993.

The CBI has said that Tiger and Dossa had helped Dawood Ibrahim in engineering the serial blasts in Mumbai on March 12, 1993, in which 257 persons were killed and 713 injured.
