Will Afzal Hang?

October 07, 2006
On Tuesday, Tabasum Guru, wife of Mohammad Afzal Guru, set to be hanged on October 20 for his involvement in the attack on Parliament in 2001, filed a mercy petition with President A P J Abdul Kalam.

Families of the security personnel killed in the 2001 attack on Parliament had approached President A P J Abdul Kalam on Monday, requesting him not to grant pardon to Mohammed Afzal Guru.

On Wednesday, President of Bharatiya Jan Shakti Uma Bharti and former Delhi Chief Minister Madan Lal Khurana courted arrest along with hundreds of their supporters demanding the hanging of Mohammed Afzal Guru.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the All Parties Hurriyet Conference on thursday urged the Bush Administration to prevail on India to grant clemency to Afzal, who has been sentenced to death for his role in the attack on the Parliament.

Afzal's family met President A P J Abdul Kalam at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday afternoon. At the meeting were Afzal's mother Ayesha Begum, his wife Tabassum and seven-year-old son Ghalib.
