The Border Security Force on Monday exchanged fire with the Bangladesh Rifles in the Katigora area of Cachar district in Assam, when Bangladeshi farmers tried to cut paddy from Indian land, official sources said.
A group of Bangladeshi farmers entered Indian land from the Surma river between Amalsheed and Barthakuri of Bangladesh with a motive to cut paddy on Sunday night, sources said.
When the Bangladeshis refused to return to their country despite repeated warnings by the Indian border guards, the BSF opened fire, sources said.
The BDR also fired back, resulting in an exchange of few rounds of bullets but none was injured, sources said, adding the situation in the area was tense but under control.
