Accompanied by wife Gursharan Kaur, Dr Singh visited Mahajan's residence at Poorna building in Worli at the end of his day-long visit to Mumbai. Union Minister of State in PMO Prithviraj Chouhan accompanied the prime minister.

Soon after reaching the Mahajan residence, Dr Singh paid floral tributes to the BJP leader before meeting his wife Rekha, son Rahul, daughter Poonam and brother-in-law and BJP leader Gopinath Munde.

State BJP president Nitin Gadkari, Mumbai party chief Prakash Mehta and BJP leader Vinod Tawade were also present during the prime minister's visit.

"The prime minister said since he too was a member of the Rajya Sabha, he closely watched Mahajan for years and would remember him as a balanced and well-studied speaker," Munde later told reporters.

"May God give you strength to bear the loss," Dr Singh told family members, Munde said, during the 15-minute visit.

BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, who was critically injured after being shot at by his younger brother Praveen on April 22, passed away on May three after battling for life at Hinduja Hospital for 12 days.
