Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has said that India had assured her that necessary steps will be taken to deport Bangladeshi ultras in that country.
Zia told Parliament that the assurance was given during her state visit to New Delhi last month at the invitation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
"There are many terrorists staying over there. After committing misdeeds here, the terrorists take shelter in that country. Not only had we raised the matter but also handed them a list containing names and addresses of the terrorists," she was quoted as saying by the UNB news agency.
Although there is no extradition treaty between the two countries, the Indian government assured that they would inquire into it, and if any terrorists were found, they would take measures to send them back, the Bangladesh premier said.
To a question on trade gap with India, Zia said Bangladesh has sought duty-free access, removal of non-tariff and para-tariff barriers, the marketing of Bangladeshi products to northeastern states of India and more Indian investment to help reduce the imbalance. She said the issue of trade gap was discussed both at official level and business-delegation level during her visit.
She noted that an agreement on promotion and protection of investment was in the process to be signed by the two countries. Describing her India visit as 'undoubtedly successful,' the prime minister said it will create a congenial environment for resolving the longstanding issues between the two countries.
