President A P J Abdul Kalam Monday promised to take all "necessary action" in the wake of public outrage over the acquittal of all the accused in the Jessica Lal murder case.

He conveyed this to a delegation of NDTV journalists led by the channel's chief editor Prannoy Roy who submitted a petition to him from over 2,00,000 of its viewers requesting a re-trial in the sensational murder case.

"I will study the petition and take necessary action. This is my promise," the President told them after a 20-minute meeting during which he took a copy of the CD and read some of the messages, including e-mails from the channel's viewers.

"It does not get higher than this. By receiving the petition, he has sent a strong message both to the system and the nation that he is willing to listen when justice is not done," Roy said after the meeting.

The four-member delegation also impressed on the President that the acquittals in the case "exemplified many problems with the legal system", Roy said.
