The Centre has accorded National Heritage status to the Dandi March route to mark the 75th anniversary of the historic march taken out by Mahatma Gandhi.

The historic Dandi route, covering 386 km from the famous Sabarmati Ashram of Mahatma Gandhi in Ahmedabad to Dandi village in Navsari district, has been marked as National Highway No. 228 and will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 344 crore, Gujarat Road and Building Minister I K Jadeja said in Gandhinagar on Saturday.

"The Heritage Project will cover all the important historical places on the route, which the Father of the Nation had covered on foot with his thousands of followers between March 5 and April 6 in 1930 to commence the 'salt satyagraha' against the British regime," Jadeja said.

The minister said the state government had completed all necessary paper work for transfer of lands to proper authorities for smooth functioning of the project.
