The family of Rahul Mahajan was in a "state of shock" on Friday after hearing the news of his critical condition in a Delhi hospital, almost a month after his father and Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary Pramod Mahajan passed away.

Rahul's mother Rekha and his sister Poonam Rao, who kept away from media glare, are staying in the 'Bheema Vaitarna' building, a few metres away from their earlier residence at Poorna Godavari in posh Worli area, from where they had shifted after Mahajan's death, BJP sources said.

Mahajan's brother and Rahul's uncle Prakash Mahajan, who lives in Aurangabad rushed to Mumbai on Friday morning after hearing about Rahul's condition and is expected to fly to Delhi later, sources said.

Top BJP state leaders including state unit chief Nitin Gadkari and Vinod Tawade visited the Mahajan residence, hours after hearing the news that Rahul was in a serious condition in Apollo Hospital and that Pramod's secretary Vivek Maitra died of suspected poisoning.

The body of Maitra would be brought to Mumbai this evening and the funeral would take place on Saturday at Khargar in Navi Mumbai, BJP secretary Atul Bhatkalkar said.

There was a heavy police presence outside the Mahajan residence and only party leaders and VIP visitors were allowed entry into the building.
