Haj team holds emergency meeting

Indian leaders of the Haj goodwill delegation and Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha K Rahman Khan on Friday held an emergency meeting in Mecca to take stock of the situation after 28 Indians were confirmed dead in Thursday's stampede at Mina.

Control Rooms have been set up at the Indian Haj Mission, Makkah, Consulate General of India, Jeddah, and the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, which will work round-the-clock to provide information regarding the deceased.

The control room number at Mecca is 00966-2-5758218, at Jeddah are 00966-2-6520104, 6533032, 6520072 and at Riyadh are 00966-1-4884697, 4881982.

Minister of State for External Affairs, E Ahamed, said in a statement that officials of the Indian Mission in Saudi Arabia were getting in touch with the next of kin of the deceased Indian pilgrims for speedy completion of burial formalities as per Islamic custom as the bodies are to be buried as early as possible under the Saudi rules.

He said dispensaries and the main hospital in Mecca have been put on high alert and efforts were on to trace the pilgrims reported missing.
