The man who shot the Pope

On May 13, 1981, Pope John Paul II, head of the Catholic church, was shot twice by a man called Mehmet Ali Agca. The Pope survived and Agca was arrested with a gun still smoking in his hand.

A quarter of a century later, and almost a year after the death of the Pope, Agca has finally found freedom. On Thursday, January 12, he was released from Kartal Prison in Istanbul.

He may be taken by the Turkish army for missed military service, but, for now, there will be no more bars.
