Five Tamil youth were killed and two injured in a grenade explosion in the eastern port city of Trincomalee Monday evening, causing tension in the area.
The incident took place near the beach in Trincomalee town where people from all communities gather in the evening to spend time.
When contacted, military sources in Colombo said the incident took place late Monday evening when the grenade allegedly meant to attack security personnel in the area accidentally exploded.
"Five Tamil youth believed to be of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam were killed on the spot while two more were wounded during the accidental explosion," military sources said adding, the injured youth had been rushed to a nearby hospital.
