Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu has moved a petition in the Supreme Court challenging his conviction and the three-year sentence handed by the Punjab and Haryana high court.
He was convicted for causing the death of an elderly man on a Patiala street 18 years ago in a brawl over parking space.
The high court on December 6 suspended his sentence till January 2007 to enable him to appeal in the apex court.
Earlier, a lower court had acquitted the 43-year-old former Indian opener.
However, the high court held Sidhu and co-accused Rupinder Singh Sandhu guilty for the death of Gurnam Singh and directed them to pay Rs 1 lakh to the widow of the victim.
Both of them were granted bail after they complied with the high court order asking them to furnish a bail bond of Rs 10,000 each and a surety. Sandhu is yet to file his appeal.
