A mixed verdict for Munnabhai

December 02, 2006
After 11 years of being out on bail, with uncertainty constantly his companion, actor Sanjay Dutt was found guilty on Tuesday under the Arms Act for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts.

Sanjay, who spent about 16 months in prison after his arrest in April 1993, was found guilty under Sections 3 and 7 read with Section 25 of the Indian Arms Act. He could face a sentence of five years.

Sanjay was, however, let off under the draconian TADA. "He is not a terrorist," Judge Kode announced, much to the relief of the actor and his family.

The court, on Sanjay's plea, extended his bail and asked him to surrender on December 19. Riding high on the success of Lage raho Munnabhai, the star will have to settle his private affairs and complete his shooting assignments in the interim. The verdict, met with mixed reactions, has been both a relief and a moment of reckoning for the 47-year-old.
