Pravin Mahajan, charged with murderous assault on his elder brother and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pramod Mahajan, has still to account for 56 of the total 90 bullets he had purchased for his licensed .32 mm calibre Belgian Browning pistol, allegedly used in commiting the crime on April 22.

Special public prosecutor Shrikant Bhatt on Saturday made this one of the grounds for seeking extension in his police remand in the court of Additional Metropolitan Magistrate R T Badge in Mumbai. The court granted extension till May 3.

Bhatt said Pravin had given account of only 34 bullets out of the total 90 purchased by him till the crime was committed and hence the police require time to investigate it.

Pravin (45) had allegedly fired four bullets at his 56-year-old brother at the latter's Worli apartment in Mumbai.

While three bullets, which hit Mahajan in the chest and abdoman, are still embedded in his body, the fourth misfired and jammed the pistol.

After the crime, Pravin gave himself up along with the firearm at nearby Worli police station.
