A team of the special cell of Delhi police has arrested Sher Singh Rana from Kolkata and has brought him to Delhi for further questioning. Rana had escaped from the Tihar jail in 2004 in a dramatic manner leading to the suspension of the deputy jail superintendent and several others for dereliction of duty.
Rana is the principal accused in the murder of dacoit turned Parliamentarian Phoolan Devi. She was killed at the gate of her residence on July 25, 2001 when she was returning home from Parliament.
The matter was handed over to special cell of Delhi police for investigation. Rana's brother and one of his friends played a key role in the escape of the accused from Tihar jail. A fake jail transfer order was shown to the staff of Tihar jail and the accused and his accomplice sped away in a three wheeler.
Rana had phoned a television news network while on the run to give his version of the story. He will be produced before court on Tuesday morning where the Delhi police would seek remand as it needs to find out the names of the persons who assisted Rana after his jail break and helped him stay away from Delhi police.
