The prince and the duchess in India

< Back > < Next >

Three years after his last visit, Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, was in India with his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. The royal couple began their visit at a reception with the English cricket team in New Delhi and then visited Punjab and Rajasthan. As the head of several environmental charities, Charles' itinery for the couple involved meeting farmers and artisans.

But the royal couple had a few hiccups. At the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research Institute in Mohali, she took a tumble and was rescued by Charles just in time. In Rajasthan, while she battled stomach cramps, the prince was overwhelmed by the desert heat. And two PETA activists followed them throughout the trip, dressed as bears to protest the use of bearskin in hats for royal guards.

Nonetheless, the trip was successful on the whole. Most notably, though, Charles did not take his new bride to visit the Taj Mahal. On an earlier trip here with his first wife, the late Diana, he had not accompanied her to the world-famous monument.
