Heavy rains triggered by cyclonic storm in Andhra Pradesh claimed 58 lives as the state government sought Rs 1,200 crore Central assistance on Wednesday to tide over the situation.
"The situation is quite grim. We have evacuated over 1.50 lakh people from the affected areas and set up 473 relief camps," Chief Minister Y S Rajsekhara Reddy told reporters on Wednesday night, on his return from an aerial survey of the worst-affected Khammam, Krishna, West Godavari districts.
Meanwhile, the Orissa government on Tuesday sought the help of Coast Guard to trace 19 fishermen, who are missing in the wake of a cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal, official sources said.
At least 30 Bangladeshi fishermen were feared killed and hundreds more missing after their boats were caught in stormy weather and tidal waves, officials said Wednesday.
Torrential rains lashed Gujarat claiming 11 lives and a high alert has been sounded across the state Friday as many people were shifted to safer places in Nashik and Goa following the incessant downpour.
