India and the United States have established a virtual coordination and information center to share best practices on democracy, identify opportunities for joint support and highlight capacity building for training programmes.

As a part of the initiative, the US and India are working to strengthen democratic capacity in societies who wish to become more open and pluralistic, a statement from the Department of State said in Washington.

The US and India are also cooperating closely under the auspices of the Community of Democracies supporting UN electoral assistance programmes. The two countries committed their governments to a Global Democracy Initiative during the summit meeting of President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in July.
