Irritated on being jostled around to facilitate good photographs, an elephant trampled to death a tourist guide and injured two foreigners on Thursday in Amber Palace Fort complex, 15 km from Jaipur, police said.
The tourist guide, Vinod Amba, died on the way to the hospital while the two Belgian women, Warmpues Raini and Louis Domnis, were admitted to Jaipur's SMS hospital. One of them was discharged after first aid, Rajendra Singh at the Amber police station, told reporters.
The incident occurred when the foreigners, posing for a snap in front of the elephant in the Jaleb Chowk of the fort, requested the mahout (trainer) to change its position, to facilitate a good photo. At this, the animal turned hostile and lifting the tourist guide with his trunk, crushed him under his feet.
He then chased other tourists all over the open terrace, Singh said. The elephant belonged to a certain Sahid and was being routinely used for travelling to and from the fort, he added.
