Although most of New Orleans' 485,000 residents were evacuated before the storm, thousands were trapped in their homes. Emergency shelters are now full, with over 78,000 people crowding them. A large number of homes and businesses have been declared 'beyond repair'.

According to the US Coast Guard, around 20 oilrigs and platforms are also missing in the Gulf, some sunk, others adrift.
