The Left parties decided on Thursday to resume their participation in the United Progressive Alliance-Left Coordination Committee following the UPA government's decision not to sell shares of public sector Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited and other navratna companies.

This was disclosed in a statement by Left parties' leaders including Communist Party of India-Marxist general secretary Prakash Karat, A B Bardhan of the Communist Party of India, Abani Roy of the Revolutionary Socialist Party and Debabrata Biswas of the Forward Bloc.

Reading from the statement, Karat said the Left parties have considered a letter from UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi,in response to their June 26 letter in which they had made known their decision to boycott the meetings.

"Mrs Gandhi's letter has conveyed the government's decision not to proceed with the disinvestment of shares in BHEL. The prime minister had earlier informed (us) that the government does not intend to sell the shares of BHEL and other navaratna companies," the statement said.

"In view of these developments, the Left parties have decided to resume their participation in the UPA-Left Coordination Committee," it added.
