Chief Election Commissioner B B Tandon spoke to the Chief Secretary of Bihar G S Kang and asked him to tighten up security arrangements for the candidates of all the political parties and ensure adequate presence of the security forces during the poll rallies of all the political parties.
Tandon expressed the displeasure of the Election Commission on the breakdown of the law and order situation in the state when the nomination process for the assembly polls has barely begun.
He took Kang to task for not making proper security arrangements for the rally in which former union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad was shot at and injured by a man from point blank range. The assailant was later beaten to death by Bharatiya Janata Party supporters.
Kang, according to sources in the Bihar government, assured the commission that the state administration would carry out the directives of the commission in letter and spirit.
