A two-member Election Commission team began its three-day visit of Bihar on Friday morning to assess whether the state is ready for polls.

Official sources said that during the visit, the EC team will meet top government officials and leaders of major political parties to know their views about when to hold polls in the state.

The EC will decide on the possible dates of next assembly polls on the basis of the team's report. "The team will submit its report to the EC on Monday," an EC source said.

Deputy Election Commissioner Anand Kumar and EC's legal advisor S K Mendiratta, soon after they arrived, met and held discussions with officials of the state election commission followed by a high level meeting with the top brass of state administration.

They would also meet leaders of major political parties including the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, Janata Dal-United and Left parties to know their views.

The team members will meet district magistrates of Patna, Bhagalpur and also those of flood prone districts.

"The EC team members will visit Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur district in next two days to assess the law and order situation and also how floods would affect the polls," official sources said.

The team will meet the district magistrates of Maoist affected central Bihar and other districts during its next visit to the state. The team will make an on-the-spot survey of the logistical support and time needed by the state administration to prepare for the elections.
