The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on Thursday ruled out any compromise in its basic ideology, effectively closing the door on Lal Kishenchand Advani's return as Bharatiya Janata Party chief.

Frantic efforts by Advani loyalists to work out a compromise to resolve the face off with over its praise for Mohammad Ali Jinnah made little headway, prompting the parliamentary board meeting to be postponed.

The RSS, while taking the public stance that the leadership issue was BJP's internal affair, left no one in doubt that a compromise on basic ideology was not possible.

The meeting will now be held at 1800 IST on Friday.

Announcing the postponement, senior leader Sushma Swaraj declined to give any reason for it.

Party sources, contradicting the RSS sources, said the meeting was rescheduled in a bid to gain more time to work out a formula that would satisfy Advani, who had reportedly expressed his displeasure over the absence of reference to his Pakistan visit in the resolution passed on Wednesday.

Party vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said senior leader Jaswant Singh, who was away in Israel, also expressed his desire to participate in the meeting.

The resolution had also not made any reference to his remarks on Mohammed Ali Jinnah in a way that would have defended him from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

The BJP, earlier on Thursday, had redrafted the resolution.
