The strike called by Left parties in Gurgaon to protest the police lathicharge on workers of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Limited evoked little response on Thursday with normal life remaining unaffected.

Shops and business establishments were operating as usual while vehicular traffic was normal. Corporate offices were also functioning as usual and there were no disruptions on the national highway.

The unions of public sector banks and the public works department have supported the strike.

A representative of the local market union said that while they empathised with HMSI workers, it was important to keep business establishments operating normally.

There was a strong police presence in the city to prevent any untoward incident, a senior police official said. There were reports of light use of force by the police to disperse workers outside the HMSI plant in Manesar, but the official denied it.

Communist Party of India leader Gurudas Dasgupta visited the Civil Hospital where seven of the injured in Monday's lathicharge are undergoing treatment.

He accused the local administration of working to ensure that the bandh was unsuccessful.
