Gujarat continued to reel under the onslaught of torrential rains on Friday with the death toll mounting to 90.

Over two lakh people were shifted to safer places as armed forces personnel joined state rescue operations, state revenue minister Kaushik Patel said.

The state government was treating it as a calamity and Chief Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to send powerful boats from Mumbai to help in rescue operations.

The state also sought Rapid Action Force assistance in the rescue and relief work. The RAF is being urged to provide help in 12 villages in the Ahmedabad district where incessant rains has thrown life out of gear.

The flood situation continued to be grim with heavy rains pounding Vadodara, Surat and other parts of south Gujarat for a week now.

The government has announced closure of all educational institutions in the state till Monday.
