The explosion occurred amidst increasing political tension ahead of the general election. Lebanon's pro-Syrian government, which counts on its neighbour for security, has come under fire from the anti-Syrian opposition.

The Lebanese government held an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss events. The opposition, meanwhile, met at Al-Hariri's apartment and publicly accused the pro-Syrian government and Damascus of being responsible for the assassination, saying they failed to provide adequate security.
