A Dubai-bound passenger, who had allegedly swallowed 159 capsules containing foreign currencies valued more than Rs 16 lakh, was arrested on charges of smuggling while three others were detained in the same case by the customs officials at the international airport in Mumbai Friday.
Acting on a tip-off, the accused Abdulla Abdul Khadeer, possessing an Indian passport, was detained and taken to J J Hospital where he ejected capsules containing assorted foreign currencies, Customs Additional Commissioner (Air Intelligence Unit) Nishith Goyal told PTI.
"We detained Khadeer and three others after getting specific information at the time of their departure to Dubai by an Oman Airways flight, WY 806," Goyal said.
The passengers were intercepted on December 23, 2005, and the officials seized foreign currencies worth Rs 16.38 lakh and another Rs 25,000 in Indian currency.
"Three other passengers have been kept under observation, though we have not found anything from them. Further investigations are in progress," he added.
