On the first anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami, the United States has said it "…stands with its partners and friends from around the world" that suffered from the disaster.

"December 26 marks the one year anniversary of the tragic earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 200,000 people in eight countries and took the homes and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands more," US State Department Deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said in a statement.

"The responses to natural disasters around the world this past year, including here in the United States, demonstrated that the international community can join together and respond generously during times of distress" it said.

The US said it has provided $ 841 million for tsunami relief and reconstruction, and the American people have contributed more than $ 1.8 billion in private funds.

"We will continue to help with reconstruction and we join with the people in all the affected countries in observing and remembering the tragic events of December 26, 2004," Ereli said.
