The Bharatiya Janata Party has accused the United Progressive Alliance government of trying to shield guilty ministers who have been indicted in the Justice G T Nanavati report on anti-Sikh riots in 1984.
According to sources, Jagdish Tytler, minister of state for NRI's, Sajjan Kumar, member of parliament from outer Delhi and Dharamdas Shastri, all Congressmen, have been named in the Nanavati report.
"The government has been forced to agree to lay the Nanavati commission report on the table of the House but it is still making desparate attempts to shield the guilty," M A Naqvi, vice president of BJP told rediff.com on Friday.
Sri Prakash Jaiswal, minister of state for home affairs, refused to give any categorical answer whether the report would be tabled on Monday or not. "Home minister Shivraj Patil has given an assurance to the House that the report would be tabled. The cabinet has also approved that it would be tabled along with the action taken report. Now leave something to us to do. The government has time till September 7. We still have one month to go," he said.
He criticised the BJP for raking up the Nanavati report issue time and again to get political mileage out of it.
Over 4000 sikhs were massacred in Delhi alone in the riots that broke out in the capital following the assassination of former prime minister Mrs Indira Gandhi by her two body guards Beant Singh and Satwant Singh.
