On Thursday, another chapter was added to the Indian Railways' annals of train accidents.

The Ahmedabad-bound Sabarmati Express collided with a stationary goods train at Samlaya, about 30 km from Vadodara, around 0330 IST, leaving at least 17 people, including the train's driver and his assistant, dead and more than 80 injured.

The engine and seven coaches of the train, coming from Varanasi, were badly damaged.
