Tightening its grip on checking corruption in government departments, the Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday carried out countrywide searches on premises of civil servants and other officials.

The raids, the third countrywide search this year, began in the wee hours of the day and was targetted at officials of several government, bank and public sector undertakings for alleged bungling and corrupt practices, CBI sources said.

The raids were carried out simultaneously in major cities as part of the agency's drive to check corruption among government officials, a CBI spokesman told PTI.
