Nilanga in Maharashtra will be witnessing a clash between a former chief minister and his grandson in the forthcoming assembly polls.
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday announced the candidature of Sambhaji Diliprao Patil Nilangekar from Nilanga in Latur district to take on sitting MLA and former chief minister Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar of the Congress.
Nilanga, once a pocket borough of the latter, crumbled in the last Lok Sabha elections when Sambhaji's mother, Rupa, who belongs to the BJP, handed out a shock defeat to Shivraj Patil on his home turf, Latur.
The Nilanga assembly segment falls in the Latur Lok Sabha constituency. Shivraj Patil, who had won from Latur for eight consecutive terms, trailed Rupa by a substantial number of votes in the Nilanga assembly segment despite intense campaigning by the senior Nilangekar.
