The US general election of November 2 could be historic for Indian Americans, in that it will give the community its second Congressman in 46 years.

Piyush 'Bobby' Jindal is poised to win a seat in Congress from Louisiana. In fact, his race is being seen as a one-horse affair with no viable candidate opposing the Republican.

The elections will, further, give the community its fifth representative in a state legislature. Nikki Haley has already won an assembly seat in South Carolina, and only needs to wait for the formal announcement to make it official. When that happens, she will join Kumar Barve in Maryland, Upendra Chivukula in New Jersey, and Swati Dandekar in Iowa (all assembly) and Satveer Chaudhary in Minnesota (senate) as one of five Indian Americans holding state legislature seats.

Five could well become six. Siddharth Das, contesting for the New Hampshire State Assembly on the Democratic ticket, has been attracting a lot of recent attention with a vigorous campaign; pundits reckon he has a fair chance of winning.

Swati Dandekar is the only one in the list seeking re-election; her record in her first term, plus a vigorous campaign, make her re-election almost certain.

Across the country, Indian Americans are running for local-level offices as well, with a fair few poised to win. George Joseph in New York City and Aziz Haniffa in Washington, DC, present a checklist of the various races:
