In October 2001, India and Pakistan trade heavy fire along the Line of Control, with both sides accusing each other of initiating the artillery battle.

In December, Parliament is stormed by Pakistan-trained terrorists. India retaliates by imposing sanctions on Pakistan, cutting off diplomatic and other ties.

Pakistan retaliates with similar sanctions. By the end of the year, both sides mass troops along the border sparking international fears of nuclear conflict.
