The Punjab Legislative Assembly on Monday adopted a Bill terminating its water sharing agreements with four neighbouring states.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Lal Kishenchand Advani, who met the prime minister on Tuesday morning, said: "The prime minister shared our concerns and he assured us he will be calling the chief ministers to Delhi to discuss the issue."

The former deputy prime minister was accompanied by the Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Jaswant Singh.

Advani said the Punjab government's move would set a "worrisome precedent."

"We told him [the prime minister] that the Centre has a major role to play in solving the issue. We asked him to try to restore the status quo and, thereafter, the matter can be discussed," Advani said.
