Some of the best dishes prepared in Kashmir, like 'harisa' and duck with turnip, are cooked during the winters because of their high calorific and protein content.
Earthen fire-pots woven intricately into willow wicker baskets called 'kangris' are still Kashmir's best bet against the cold. The kangris makes a convenient combination with a tweed over-garment called the pheren.
As Kashmir turned white with the first snowfall, people gathered in market squares sporting their new pheren.
