A 24-hour general strike, called by trade unions to protest a Supreme Court order barring unions from going on strike hit normal life across Kerala on Tuesday.

The impact of the strike was most visible in the road transport sector where majority of unions joined the 'stay-away' protest.

The rail traffic, however, was not disrupted.

Though most government employees' union have also joined the strike, their absence from offices did not have much of an impact as the government has declared a holiday following the death of Governor Sikander Bakht on Sunday night.

Market operations were, however, hit with shopkeepers joining the strike.

Pro-Congress INTUC and RSS-controlled Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh are not participating in the strike.
