Dhananjoy Chatterjee, a lift operator, was sent to the gallows in August for raping and murdering a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Kolkata in 1990.
He was hanged to death after West Bengal Governor Viren J Shah and President A P J Abdul Kalam rejected his plea for clemency and the Supreme Court dismissed a petition challenging the President's decision.

A sessions court had sentenced Chatterjee [39] to death for raping and murdering Hetal Parekh on March 5, 1990. The Calcutta high court and later the Supreme Court upheld the decision.
The execution was carried out on August 14 at the Alipore Central Jail in West Bengal.
