2004 was a year of upheavals. It saw the end of the National Democratic Alliance government, and the Congress return to power with support from other parties. But what remains etched in memory is Sonia Gandhi's refusal to accept the prime ministership.

But the bigger upheaval was seismic. The yearend saw the eastern coast ravaged by the tsunami waves, the first ever in India's recorded history.

In between, there were many moments that confirmed the year's reputation as cataclysmic.
