Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Wednesday announced in the state assembly a special development grant of Rs 10 lakh for Harsa-Mansar village in recognition of the service rendered by its inhabitants in the aftermath of the Mukerian train accident on Tuesday.

Thirty-eight people were killed and over 50 injured when the Ahmedabad-bound Jammu Tawi Express collided with a local train near Mansar.

The residents of the village in Hoshiarpur district carrying iron rods, axes, ropes and other material rescued scores of injured passengers.

Correcting his statement on the death toll made in the House on Tuesday, the chief minister said, "The death toll is 37 and its not 50 as I [had] said."

He said all the dead and injured were evacuated and shifted to various hospitals. "The cause of the accident is apparently human error," he added.

The chief minister, along with Assembly Speaker Kewal Krishan and Health Minister Romesh Chand Dogra, had visited the accident spot on Tuesday.
