Rail services in north India disrupted

Railway services in north India would remain disrupted till next week due to damage to rail tracks following incessant rains, resulting in cancellation or diversion of trains bound for Chandigarh, Kalka, Jammu and Amritsar.

Services on the Delhi-Ambala-Chandigarh-Kalka section is expected to be restored by Saturday evening while the section connecting Delhi to Amritsar and Jammu will be ready for operations by August 13, Northern Railway General Manager R R Jharuhar told reporters in Chandigarh on Thursday.

Railways have suffered a direct loss of Rs nine crore besides indirect losses resulting from cancellation of tickets, he said after making an on-the-spot investigation of the damaged Ambala-Rajpura stretch on the main (Delhi-Amritsar/Jammu) line and Ambala-Chandi Mandir portion on the Ambala-Kalka section.

Some of the Chandigarh-bound trains, including the two Shatabdis, would run till Ambala from New Delhi while some long-distance trains, including the Chandigarh-Lucknow Sadhbhavna Express, Howrah-Kalka Mail and Chandigarh-Jodhpur Express and some passenger trains, would remain cancelled till August 7, when the situation would be reviewed.

Northern Railways has also cancelled all passenger trains running between Hisar-Ludhiana for two days with effect from Friday in view of the damage to rail tracks at several places in Punjab.
