Rushdie's first tryst with the altar was with literary agent Clarissa Luard (who died in 1999). A year before the February 14, 1989 Iranian fatwa on his life following publication of The Satanic Verses, he had married author Marianne Wiggins (Evidence Of Things Unseen 2004). Elizabeth West became his third wife in 1990. Rushdie and West -- who he credits with saving his life during all those years he spent in hiding -- co-edited Mirrorwork: 50 Years of Indian Writing 1947-1997 a book of stories by Indian authors.
