Prince Charles, Kalam discuss welfare

Prince Charles, who is on a nine-day visit to India, on Wednesday called on President A P J Abdul Kalam.

During the 45-minute meeting, the President gave him a broad outline of 'Vision 2020' to make India a developed country.

The meeting, which began with the two exchanging pleasantries and discussing various welfare projects undertaken in their respective nations, spilled over into the Mughal Gardens.

Kalam explained to the dignitary the programme for Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas, which was very essential for achieving 'Vision 2020'.

The President informed him of the rapid strides India had made in the field of information technology and other fields.

The prince said, "India has deep roots in our past. It is part of our collective memory. It will also be a long-term partner in our future security and prosperity."
