A Sister of Charity prays before a relic of Mother Teresa near Pope John Paul II during the beatification ceremony.

Sunday's Mass saw a sea of blue and white, the uniform of the nuns of the Missionaries of Charity.

Mother Teresa, who was known as the 'Saint of the Gutters' for her work with the poor, won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1979.

The two-hour beatification ceremony had a procession of Indian women and girls led by a couple carrying a piece of cloth soaked in Mother Teresa's blood.

Many Indians attended the historic event. Sticks of incense burned as young women in green and saffron saris danced to the rhythms of a tabla.
