Even though he was born in Dumraon, Bihar, the Ustad preferred to live in his beloved Banaras in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh. When one reporter asked him why, Bismillah Khan replied, "Because it is in Banaras that I grew up with my father. It is here that I learnt the notes of the shehnai."
